Awards final destination for Gatineau Hills tourist stops

Gatineau Hills boasts high tourist traffic and the smaller, local venues find themselves on the road to higher recognition.

Tourism Outaouais revealed the nominees for the 2011 Public’s Choice Award and several Wakefield and Chelsea spots made the list of finalists.

But they’re up against some heavy competition in the Outaouais tourism industry.

Two bed and breakfasts are competing against Fairmont le Chateau Montebello.

Dawn Airey didn’t think her three-roomed Auberge de Mon Petit Chum B&B would have any chance against the luxury hotel. But she heard that the larger “check-in, check-out” hotels have nothing on the smaller tourist stops who typically win the regional recognition award.

Airey, who describes her five-year-old bed and breakfast as a “home away from home,”  hopes to see any Wakefield business win. Her spot is up for a prize under the “accommodations” category, alongside Manon Leblanc’s Auberge Old Chelsea B&B.

Wakefield’s bison producer, Ranch Panoramique, is competing for “regional products,” and Eco-Odyssey and Edelweiss are named in the “attractions” category.

To vote for the little guys in this year’s Public’s Choice award, visit You will also be entered to win a getaway package at any of the nominated locales, but you must vote by May 6. The winners will be announced May 26.
