I do have a baseball related question for all candidates in Ward 2. In order for baseball to accommodate our increasing numbers and in order to bring tournaments and playoffs into Chelsea we need to invest in our field. I would argue that improvements to the diamond itself and the ability to play at night would have a positive economic impact. More kids and parents would come to Chelsea, visit the local stores for a drink or a candle and go for a bite at the restaurants and perhaps spend a few hours relaxing at a spa.

Mathieu,
Thank you for your question. Although I am a great supporter of community activities and sports for people of all ages especially young people, I really don’t think lighting a ball diamond at night is the wisest use of recreational capital funding. Improving the fields, yes definitely. But, I would be inclined to exercise some restrictions to the all out suburban approach to recreation facilities. It is for this reason that I intend to be very watchful of the future steps in taking the Meredith Centre from the concept that it is at present through to working drawings and then bidding stage. There were very definite commitments made about adhering to set capital costs. I intend to see that the commitment to the community about the final cost of the project is honored, even if it means scaling it down.
