Chelsea, Quebec Hockey dad calls for Meredith Centre replay

by admin on September 1, 2010

The Editor,

Like so many residents of Chelsea, Quebec who voted Yes for the Meredith Centre and voted for Mayor Caryl Green, I voted for construction of a hockey rink – not a conference centre.

As a dad who plays hockey, I saw the Meredith Centre as an opportunity to have a local rink in which my kids could learn to play the great Canadian sport. The rink would provide a central location for recreational activity which could easily be expanded to become a community centre for sports and arts activities together. What a great way to bring young and old families together in our little town.

Regarding funding, I guarantee that ice time available on weekends and evenings would be sold out in less than a year. As an organizer of adult hockey, I know how difficult it is rent ice for recreational hockey in the Ottawa-Gatineau region.

For my team, we are paying $260 per hour at the University of Ottawa rink, and there is a waiting list for any available ice.

It is time to review the Meredith Centre decisions and perhaps have another referendum.
