Chelsea, Quebec makes cost-saving move in scaling back Meredith Centre

The Editor,

I am happy to hear that Chelsea council has decided to scale back the Meredith Centre project. With the unexpected costs, it seems like the responsible thing to do.

These days, we can’t be frivolous with spending, as the economic recovery is still uncertain, so it is a good idea to be a little conservative with plans. Anyone who has built

his own house or who has done renovations knows that even well-planned projects usually run over budget and take longer than expected.

This, I expect, will also happen with the Centre, but without the ice rink it will be more manageable. We will already have a debt to pay – let’s not get into a second mortgage situation!

I always hoped that the Centre would be designed to gradually incorporate additional elements that would serve the needs of the community now and in the future. I also believe that protecting the community environment and health is important, which includes protecting the water table.

Thus, I think the investment in a water-sewer system for central Chelsea is the higher priority.
