Doctor curses having to miss cussing for good cause

by admin on November 4, 2010

The Editor,

Please keep up the cursing. I saw an article in the Low Down (Oct. 13 edition) about Milton Grace, who has set up a fundraising campaign for Doctors Without Borders (Medecins sans frontieres), and the local  Wakefield, Quebec community embracing it. From cursing for a good cause to eating “Doctors Without Borders Burgers.”

I just came back from Pakistan, where I worked in the flood area for MSF as a water and sanitation co-ordinator. We provided drinking water, hygiene kits, tents, plastic sheeting, built latrines and showers in the camps. We had feeding programs for malnourished children and regular mobile clinics for the population whose land and houses had been flooded.

As we are a truly independent and neutral humanitarian organization, we cannot take funds from governments for programs in a country like Pakistan, as that would undermine our neutrality and decrease our access to the population we need to get to.

For example, we were the only international non-government organization which could work with international staff on the ground in the province of Balochistan.

So it is the private donations that keep us going there, and it is thanks to people such as Milton and everybody in Wakefield cursing a bit extra for the good cause.

Thank you for the support, that is what keeps me going, and it is fantastic to be part of a community like ours.

Some videos about MSF in Pakistan are posted on the web. Click on

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to stick around and curse along with you, as I will be off to Haiti next week to help stem the cholera outbreak.
