Sam Cloutier, 26, his wife Julie Bilodeau, 27 had just enough time to grab their two-year-old and run out of their flaming rental home in the wee hours of Dec. 28.

The young family has no insurance, and managed to escape with nothing but the clothes on their back; later salvaging just a few tools and toys from the charred remains of the log house owned by Baron Bryant at 25 Oak Rd in Edelweiss, Quebec.

Bilodeau said like many houses in the area, their electricity had been out for two days and the three decided to sleep in front of the woodstove after returning from a friend’s at about 1 a.m. An hour later, she said she woke up to smoke that was collecting on the ceiling of the living room. Bilodeau quickly saw sparks of light coming through the log walls and new the house was on fire. Cloutier called 9-11 and was told to evacuate immediately. The fire surged upward between walls to engulf the roof in a matter of minutes.

Cloutier, Bilodeau and two-year-old Maya are staying with friends for the time being but looking for a new home. The Low Down will be following their story, so make sure to pick up the Jan. 13 copy of the print edition.
