The Meredith Centre recently celebrated its one year anniversary. Reflecting back on the past year, it is incredible how the Meredith Centre has already become a real focal point for the community.
Initially, there was some concern that the Meredith Centre would be mostly used by out-of-towners. Perhaps the greatest thing about the Meredith Centre is how this has proven to be completely untrue. Not only have existing community groups started using the facilities, but new organizations have also been formed to take advantage of the Meredith Centre. It is only one year old, but it has already become one of Chelsea’s major gathering spots.
Here are a few of the many examples of local groups that take advantage of the new facility:
- Des Collines Minor Hockey Association rents dozens of hours a week and features many players from around Chelsea and the Gatineau Hills
- ACRE Chelsea, the Gatineau Valley Historical Society, and the Chelsea Cooperative Nursery School have made use of the banquet hall and meeting rooms
- On weekday evenings, the rink is rented by Chelsea Adult Pickup Hockey (CAPH). This organization features over 150 participants from around Chelsea, in both men and women divisions.
- The banquet hall is home to several spinning classes, aerobic classes, movie nights, music and dance lessons, etc. – all of which are filled with local residents ranging from young children to senior citizens.
No matter what time someone stops in at the Meredith Centre, they are guaranteed to meet a friend or a neighbour.
I think I speak on behalf of many Chelsea residents in wishing the Meredith Centre a happy birthday. In one short year, it has become a community gathering point that is used by more Chelsea residents than anyone ever thought possible.
