Sexism in Chelsea, Quebec politics

by admin on December 2, 2009

The Editor,

It is with great dismay that I read Richard Austin’s letter (Nov. 25 edition) describing our Chelsea, Que newly elected mayor, Caryl Green, as “high strung” and “high maintenance.” This can only be interpreted as sexist and insulting to all women.

It is widely agreed that an increased participation of women – at all levels of government – is needed. However, the social environment in which women politicians work can be an uphill battle. Unfortunately, sexism, both overt and covert, is part of this reality. Terms such as those used by Mr. Austin would never be used to describe a male politician.

Let us stay away from sexist remarks and personal attacks and get down to the serious challenges that confront us. Those of us who have stepped up to the plate and have personally committed to working for the good of our communities count on your support.
