Wakefest funding fallacy

The Editor,

Re: “La Peche council tops up festival funding,” May 5 edition
Congratulations to M. Meunier and the Maison de la Culture for their successful plea to the municipal council for an extra $2,000 in funding for their summer festival.

Just to clarify, Wakefest Festival des Arts did not receive $3,000 in funding from La Peche municipality as the article mentions. To date we have received “in-kind” support from council – to a total value of $250 – for which we are very grateful.

For the record: Wakefest is a four day arts festival that not only highlights local artists but also brings in artists from away. Over the past three years we have brought in writers, artists, performers and musicians from Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver. Wakefest Arts Festival – August 26th to August 29th – attracts thousands of people to the area and supports local businesses during one of the slowest weekends of the year. To date, we have received federal funds from Heritage Canada as well as local businesses whose owners believe the arts contribute significantly to the quality of life, the cultural identity and social well being, as well as the economic prosperity of our community.

M. Meunier’s success with council is definitely an indication that our mayor and councillors also believe that the arts are worth the investment! We are looking forward to our own “top-up” in the near future!
