You did it, Wakefield!

The village with the irrepressible spirit managed to beat out Beauceville for online votes – and will be taking home the $25,000 cash prize.

Riverside Drive became one long stretch of collective celebration Wednesday evening, when RDS TV announced at about 6:45 p.m. that Wakefield had won the nation-wide Kraft Celebration Tour.

As a result, Kraft and TSN will award the Wakefield Community Centre $25,000.

In a crowded Kaffé 1870, Patrick Poitras, president of the Wakefield Recreation Association, got down on his knees and cheered. Around him, Ingrid Mertens and Louis Rompre threw their arms up in exultation, as did the rest of the crowd. A similar crowd had gathered in the Black Sheep Inn.

The money will go to building a skateboard park in the new Community Centre.

Voting began at noon on Tuesday July 20 and continued for 24 hours. Wakefield was shortlisted with Beauceville, Quebec. Over that period of time voters could log on to www.kraftcelebration.tsn.ca and vote as many times as they could for either community. Before the announcement, the numerous hardcore Wakefield voters were complaining of red eyes.

The Kraft Celebration Tour will award ten Canadian communities a $25,000 prize each. The competition is meant to award small communities who display the most spirit and dedication to their town.

The competition is sponsored by Kraft Canada Inc., The Sports Network Inc., and Le Réseau des Sports Inc.
